hey guys if anyone else found this weeks lecture on surveillance really fascinating and like me questions the whole system of surveillance for safety then this site might be useful to you. it's from the surveillance camera players info..these guys are definately my new favourite activist group. and what's really great about it is that they don't pretend to be anything but what they are. anyway, check out the website for some useful info on both september 11 and columbine. like the title of the writing states: "nothing has changed. therefore everything must change"; i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what this means to them?

  1. I agree the lecture on surveillance was interesting. However would anyone else be truly disturbed if the how surveillance culture was not for our security? I like the idea that the cameras are there to capture illegal behaviour. I can’t possibly comprehend any other reason for them besides our safety or I wish not too. How scary. And yeah the surveillance camera players are pretty awesome lol

  2. i agree... to be honest, things created for a good purpose may often be misused by other people. but i think essentially the surveillance cameras serve a useful purpose. they're not in my household (that i know of! hehe) and thats all that really concerns me. like what some people said in the seminar about street-view google earth, anything surveyed in the public sphere is no different from a person watching. i can think of a few cases where video surveillance cameras have prevented crimes or at least punished offenders; not that long ago there was a group of children who performed cruel acts to a helpless kitten. if the video cameras hadnt been there its very likely that the children would never have been caught and punished.and of course there's the well known case of 'pumpkin' who's dad stranded her at a train station. the case publicly unfolded via the media and through the means of the surveillance camera footage. (if you dont remember go to this link- http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22429049-661,00.html ) i think examples like these show that they can be used to serve the community.

  3. oh yea! i remember both those cases!! that's true. very good point. personally i still have a problem with street-view google earth. it's just beyond bizarre to me to see my home online from such a close range (not that i've looked it up mind you). i just really feel like, is nothing sacred anymore? why is this necessary? don't you find it scary that we can use satellite's to take pictures of our homes and post them freely? who knows how bloody close they could actually get to our homes and into our private lives!! it's like the celebrities that you rarely hear about you know... they live in the spotlight but try and avoid as much as possible.. for example; does anyone know anything new about say keanu reeves?! but yet i can tell you what britney spears is doing at almost every minute of the day. it's natural to want privacy.. i may have gone off on a tangent there..
